As Arizona State University's most sophisticated research facility, this 298,000-sq-ft, eight-story building brings together the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering with the School of Earth and Space Exploration to enhance interdisciplinary research, education and outreach. The sleek exterior of the structural concrete building is clad with aluminum panels, face brick and glass curtain wall. Inside, a five-story atrium links offices and cutting-edge labs. Efficient mechanical systems and fume hoods keep occupants safe while saving energy in this LEED-Gold building. Designers analyzed 36 different floor plates to balance functionality and life-cycle costs with the ability to modify labs quickly. Visitors can view a meteorite gallery, science displays and a planetarium.
