Best Health Care Project: Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center
Using a successful empowerment philosophy that helps demystify cancer treatment, this partnership between MD Anderson and Banner Health provides inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary care to patients and their families.
The facility is anchored by a 133,000-sq-ft cancer outpatient center supported by 76 patient beds on two floors. The L-shaped building optimizes the potential for future growth and creates a central landscaped healing courtyard. The south and west courtyard facades are veiled in a custom exterior shading system, which assists in patient well-being and energy efficiency.
A 68-ft-tall, open-air lantern tower—wrapped in aluminum panels that have been water-jet cut with organic leaf patterns—punctuates the design.
With nine pieces of major medical equipment, each requiring its own mechanical, electrical and architectural design, meticulous construction management was critical. Most aspects of the building were modeled in BIM, and design-assist subcontractors helped fast track the delivery by meeting weekly for 3D BIM coordination. The as-builts were kept 100% electronically on a Projectwise Web server, which was so successful that the Town of Gilbert is now piloting a 100% paperless program during its design review process.
