Snapshot: Southwest

Text size: A A

The new Las Vegas City Hall rises dramatically toward a rare cloudy sky in this shot by photographer Jeff Green. Designed by Las Vegas-based JMA Architecture Studios in collaboration with Elkus Manfredi, Boston, the seven-story office building provides an energy-efficient workplace for about 570 employees. Vertical glass fins are illuminated by LED lights that can be programmed to display any color. A film at the center of each laminated fin distributes the light evenly. Reflected in the glazing toward the bottom of the photo is the project's 115.5-kW solar photovoltaic farm, which helps the building shave more than $500,000 annually off energy costs compared with the old Las Vegas City Hall building, currently undergoing an extensive renovation (see p. SW22). Submitter JBA Consulting Engineers was responsible for the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection and technology engineering on the 293,000-sq-ft building and solar array.
