GLHN selected for UA Residence Life
Renovations
The University of Arizona has selected GLHN Architects &
Engineers, Inc. of Tucson to provide design and construction
services for the $25 million Residence Life Building Renewal
project.
The multi-phase, multi-year project will extend the useful
life of 10 University residence halls that have begun to exhibit
signs of degenerative system failures. Areas to be addressed
include replacement of mechanical, electrical and plumbing
systems, and renovation of bathrooms. Space conversions in
some dorms will also allow for an increase in resident capacity.
The project will use the construction manager at-risk delivery
method and follow an accelerated, 170-day construction schedule
during summer breaks.
GLHN has successfully completed over 200 projects for the
University of Arizona over the last 40 years.
DL Withers Starts
Field Operations Center
DL Withers Construction recently began construction on the
City of Glendale's new Field Operations Center, located at
6210 West Myrtle. The firm teamed with Arrington Watkins for
the construction managert at-risk project and is targeted
for completion in June 2004.
The new, $12.8 million complex replaces the existing facility
the city has outgrown. The state-of-the-art design is set
on 50 acres and includes six buildings. The main building
will be approximately 70,000 sq. ft., which will be the equipment
and maintenance facility for all of Glendale's cars, trucks,
and heavy equipment including fire trucks, garbage trucks,
semi-trailers and passenger cars. Additional buildings include
a new truck wash, tire maintenance and repair facility, a
structure for the service writers and a guard booth.
Firms Win ASU Student Housing Project
Kitchell Contractors was recently awarded the new Sunset
Housing project in Tempe for Texas-based Century Development
and Arizona State University.
Kitchell will provide construction management/general contracting
services for the 65,000-sq.-ft., 265-bed student housing development.
The project will feature six, three-story housing units and
a two-story student community center. Each housing unit is
equipped with 22 suites, a full residential kitchen and a
designated chapter room and study room. The student housing
project is located on Sunset Drive near the intersection of
Apache Boulevard and Rural Road on ASU's southern portion
of campus. Construction is scheduled to be complete in July
2004.
Ground Breaks on Downtown Tempe Project
Lincoln Property Company has broken ground for the $43.5
million signature project that will serve as headquarters
for the ASU Foundation and as a gateway to the ASU campus.
Located on the ASU campus at the corner of College Avenue
and University Drive, the project includes a six-story, 140,000-sq.-ft.
office building, a 1,200-space parking structure and a two-story,
15,000-sq.-ft. retail project. The development is a public/private
partnership joining private sector businesses with the university's
foundation needs.
The organization will occupy 50,000 sq. ft. of the office
building. The relocation of the foundation enables the organization
to consolidate its business operations and staff, which are
currently located in five separate buildings. An additional
90,000 sq. ft. of the new building will be leased to ASU,
providing much-needed office space on campus, reducing the
university's need to lease off-campus facilities.
The six-level parking structure will be leased to ASU to help
satisfy growing parking demands for the campus as ASU expands
its research and teaching facilities.
Architekton and Gould Evans were selected as the shell architectural
team, with McCarthy Nordburg designing the interiors and McCarthy
Building Companies, Inc. acting as the general contractor.
