Projects Win Awards at AGC-NM
'Best Buildings' Dinner

The Lofts at Albuquerque High picked up the top honors at the Associated General Contractors-New Mexico branch annual "Best Buildings" contest. Constructed by Richardson and Richardson and designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabattini, the project garnered the award for its reuse of the old Albuquerque High, which had stood vacant for 30 years. Project owner is Paradigm and Co. LLC.

Other winners included: In the Exterior/Interior double winners; Albuquerque Fire Department Station 20/Albuquerque Police Community substation, constructed by Rio Conchos Corp. and designed by Rohde May Keller McNamara Architecture P.C. and owned by the city; The Bloomfield Learning Center, constructed by Star Construction Inc. and designed by Greer Stafford/SCJF. The project is owned by the Bloomfield School District.

In the Exterior category: Alamosa Center for Family and Community Services, designed by Kells+Craig and constructed by Luther Construction and owned by the city of Albuquerque; Yates Petroleum, built by Jaynes Corp., designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabattini and owned by Yates Petroleum.

In the Interiors category: Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, designed by Kells+Craig, constructed by Luther Construction and owned by the city of Albuquerque; San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church, designed by Lloyd and Tryk Architects, constructed by Jaynes Corp. and owned by the Sandia Pueblo

In the Renovations category, the Lofts at Albuquerque and the U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building, designed by Dale F. Zinn and Associates and built by Jim Cooley Construction Inc.; The old Santa Fe Inn, designed by Duty and Germanas, built by Lockwood Construction and owned by the Barker family; The Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Round Barn, engineered by Delapp Engineering Corp., built by Blue Sky Builders Inc. and owned by Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.

In the Energy Conscious Design category: UNM School of Law, Bratton Hall, designed by Mazria Riskin Odems Inc and built by Gerald Martin General Contractor; the Desert Springs Church, designed by Insite Works, constructed by Gerald Martin and owned by Desert Springs Church.

In the Best Lighting category: Zollinger Library Learning Resource Center, University of New Mexico, designed by lighting designers Rohde May Keller Architects, with general contractor Jaynes Corp.


CFMA Names Arizona Construction Executive of the Year

The Valley of the Sun chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association recently hosted their annual "Best Under the Sun" awards dinner at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale.

President emeritus Bill Corbin of Corbins Electric was honored with the "Construction Industry Pioneer" award for his long time service to the industry.

Sundt CEO Doug Pruitt picked up the "Industry Executive of the Year" award, while Diane Christensen of FNF Construction won "Outstanding General Member of the Year." Phil Taylor of Taylor and Duffy Accounting won "Outstanding Associate Member of the Year."


Arizona Masonry Guild Elects New Board/Officers

The Arizona Masonry Guild (AMG), a non-profit organization, held its annual meeting last month to elect the 2003 - 2004 board members and officers. Seventeen members were elected to the board of directors for a two-year term.

Newly elected officers include Duane Young of Advanced Production Manufacturing, Inc., Tucson, President; Todd Nessler of Sun Valley Masonry, Inc, Phoenix, Vice President; Ted Kozikowski of Superlite Block, Phoenix, Secretary; Steve LeClaire of AZ Block 2000, Phoenix/Tucson, Treasurer. The outgoing president is Tony Ponte of Rinker, Phoenix.

The Young family has served the industry for generations. They started Young Block, a block manufacturing facility in Sierra Vista, in 1971 and opened the Tucson plant in 1979. In 1988, Duane Young was appointed general manager of the business. Under his direction, the company grew 400 percent in 11 years. The company was sold in 1999.
