AZAGC Hosts Awards
The Arizona chapter of the Associated General Contractors
Association recently held their first "Build Arizona"
awards as well as recognizing individual contributions to
the construction industry.
Combs Construction picked up a "Build Arizona"
award in the projects less than $10 million category for the
company's work on the Superior Rest Area Project on U.S. 60
near Superior, Ariz.
Hunter Contracting was also recognized in the under $10 million
category for their work on the Broadway "Diamondback"
bicycle-pedestrian bridge in Tucson.
In the projects greater than $10 million, Kiewit Western
Company won an award for ADOT's first rural design-build project,
which widened 10 miles of road on the Black Mountain Highway
between Golden Valley and Bullhead, Ariz.
Wink Ames of Minard Ames Insurance group was recognized by
the AGC as "affiliate member of the year," for his
extensive work at improving the construction industry. Ames
is in his third year as treasurer of the AGC and has been
an active member for more than 30 years.
NCA Recognizes 6 Firms
The Nevada Contractors Association recently recognized six
companies for their work on projects throughout the state.
Kitchell Contractors picked up the "Contractor of the
Year," for work on the Neonopolis, Del Webb Anthem Corporate
Headquarters and the Mountain View Hospital expansion.
Southern Nevada Paving was recognized as "Subcontractors
of the Year," for their work on 12 school projects, Anthem,
Turnberry Place and Spring Valley Hospital.
Perini Building Co. won "Building Project of the Year,"
for their $300 million Green Valley Ranch.
The heavy highway/civil project of the year award was given
to Las Vegas Paving for the $36 million I-15 Charleston flood
control project.
"The Safest Contractor of the Year," was won by
M.J. Dean Construction for their work on the Mandalay Bay
Convention Center.
Wells Capital Management picked up the "Associate of
the Year" award.
Outstanding Members Selected
The Associated Builders and Contractors Rio Grande chapter
recently selected a company and an individual as outstanding
members. Gerald Martin LTD was awarded the "Member Company
of the Year," while Wayne Bingham of Bingham, Hurst Apodaca,
Wile and Schoen as "Individual Member of the Year."
Paul Purvis Honored
The Arizona chapter of the National Underground Contractors
Association recently honored Paul Purvis, safety officer for
Sandvick Equipment and Supply, with the "Mark Dryer Safety
Award" for safety excellence.
Purvis was chosen for the annual award because of his dedication
and commitment to safety excellence.
ACNM Elects New Board
The Associated Contractors of New Mexico recently elected
a new board of directors, with David Sanchez of San Bar Construction
as the new president. Dave Krueger of A.S. Horner is the new
vice president and Vic Boren of Four Corners Materials Company
is the new treasurer.
2 ACCA Firms Recognized
Two local air conditioning contractors have been given the
highest award from the Air Conditioning Contractors of Arizona
for their leadership, professionalism and accomplishments.
Brad Porter of Air Conditioning by Jay and Warren Michelsen
of Arizona Trane were named "Members of the Year,"
by the ACCA.
ASA Member Wins National Award
Michael Boyd, President of MKB Construction, Inc., has been
selected to receive the Chapter President of the Year Award
by a panel of American Subcontractors Association Awards Committee
judges.
The Chapter President of the Year Award is presented to the
chapter president whose superior leadership efforts and service
to his/her chapter motivated that chapter to achieve its goals.
The ASA also recently made its second annual contribution
of $10,000 to the Northern Arizona University - College of
Engineering and Construction Management Department on February
21, 2003. The scholarship funds an endowment titled, "The
Ben C. Griggs / American Subcontractors Association Endowment
Fund."
AUI Wins AGC Safety Award
AUI, Inc., an Albuquerque-based construction firm, finished
second in the nation among contractors who worked more than
500,000 work hours in 2002 in heavy construction in the fourth
annual Construction Safety Excellence Award (CSEA) competition
sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America
(AGC).
The award was presented at the AGC/Willis Construction Safety
Awards breakfast March 21 during the National AGC convention
in Honolulu. Accepting for AUI. Inc., was Alan Wharton, safety
director. First place finisher in the "Heavy Division
500,000-plus work hours" was Crowder Construction Co.,
Charlotte, N.C.
It was the first CSEA award ever presented to a New Mexico-based
contractor and the only such award presented to a contractor
headquartered in the Southwest this year. The New Mexico Building
Branch, AGC, AUI, Inc.'s home chapter, nominated the company
for the award.
