The interior build-out phase, designed by SmithGroup Inc. of Phoenix, includes modifying 31,200 sq ft of existing shell space into medical classrooms, laboratories, hospital simulation spaces, offices and study rooms. McCarthy is also installing new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as relocating an existing chiller and other mechanical equipment.

Scheduled for completion in July 2009, the Shadow Lane Biomedical Facility was originally a state-owned rehabilitation center that UNLV acquired to assist in accommodating future growth within the university’s nursing and dental medicine schools. The project was divided into multiple phases to allow the university to continue utilizing the facility throughout construction.

Operating as construction manager at risk, McCarthy previously completed the interior demolition and core and shell renovation of the former rehabilitation center. McCarthy upgraded the infrastructure of the 25,000-sq-ft building by creating a “mid floor,” between the facility’s existing 23-ft ceiling and floor. The concrete work and utilization of a unique micropile foundation system allowed McCarthy to add an additional 15,000 sq ft of future learning space.

Once complete, the new Biomedical Facility will provide students with the most up-to-date learning facility and strengthen UNLV’S reputation as a top quality research institution.

Located on the corner of Charleston Boulevard and Shadow Lane, the Shadow Lane campus is in the heart of the city’s medical district and serves as the focal point for the university’s research, advanced training and professional services in biomedical sciences and biotechnology.

Construction on Trail System Begins

The city of Las Vegas began construction on the Rampart Trail and the Angel Park Trailhead in January, with construction expected to last 12 months.

This three-phase trail project will begin at the City of Las Vegas Bruce Trent Park on Vegas Drive. The trail will continue to the south adjacent to Durango Drive to tie into the trailhead phase of the project that will be constructed on the west side of Durango at Westcliff Drive. The trail will continue from the trailhead to the south and will wrap around the city’s Angel Park and then head westerly to cross Rampart Boulevard and continue along the south side of the Angel Park Golf Course and eventually terminate at Alta Drive.

The trail will accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and other modes of non-motorized travel. Landscaping will include benches, trash cans, dog waste stations, fencing and trail lighting. A pedestrian bridge will be installed across the wash area on the golf course. As part of the Angel Park Trailhead, shade structures and playground equipment will be installed.

Funding for this $4 million trail project was provided by the Bureau of Land Management through the sale of public lands as authorized by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.

Diamond Construction is the contractor, while the city of Las Vegas Public Works Department is managing the project. The city’s Planning and Development Department developed the trail concept and secured federal funds for the construction.
