The 60 projects featured in this section were selected as a representation of the largest projects that broke ground or were underway in 2006. In total, these projects will provide over $17 billion in construction activity for Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada over the coming years.

In order to highlight as many different projects as possible, each year's ranking features a different group of projects -- so projects that were on last year's list do not appear again here. You can find last year's list, as well as an electronic version of this year's, on our website at www.southwest.construction.com.

The projects are ranked by construction costs, which in some cases are estimated.

Arizona's largest project is the larger second phase of the Phoenix Convention Center expansion. New Mexico's largest project is the Chemistry and Metallurgy Building Expansion, which has been quietly underway at Los Alamos National Labs since January 2006.

But one project tops them all in regards to size: Nevada's CityCenter is the largest project ever profiled on these pages at $7.4 billion.

Most of the information was gathered through surveys sent to building teams throughout the region. We also supplemented this research using data collected by the McGraw-Hill Dodge Construction Network, as well as public records and press releases. All information is presented as up-to-date as possible at press time.
