Northern Nevada Activity Report
Reno Area Construction Keeps on Trucking
by Scott Blair
The Reno-Sparks metropolitan area saw a total of $1.3 billion
in contracts for commercial and residential construction awarded
during 2006, according to the Research and Analytics unit
of McGraw-Hill Construction. This number was down 15% from
2005.
However, the report is much rosier when residential construction
is factored out: Over $464 million in commercial construction
contracts were awarded during 2006, which was virtually even
with the strong numbers seen during 2005.
Some of the most prominent projects underway in 2006 and early
2007 include:
Renown Regional Medical Center, a $318 hospital expansion
in Reno, which was featured in the February 2007 issue of
Southwest Contractor.
Interstate-580, the $440 million final section of the route
between Reno and Sparks, including the challenging Galena
Creek Bridge.
Joe Crowley Student Union, a $46 million project at the
University of Nevada, Reno, being constructed by Las Vegas-based
The PENTA Building Group and slated for completion for fall
2007.
The new UNR Library and Knowledge Center, a $75 million
project next door to the student union, led by Reno-based
Q & D Construction.
The Palladio Condominiums, a 13-story residential building
along the Truckee River in downtown Reno. This project has
run into difficulties but is nearing completion.
Montage, a condo tower using the skeleton of a defunct casino/hotel
in downtown Reno.
Peppermill Hotel and Casino, which is undergoing a $350
expansion including a new parking garage, hotel tower, events
center, pool deck and spa.
This year's Northern Nevada Activity Report will feature in-depth
reports on three of these projects.
