This year's ranking of the 2005 Top General Contractors
of the Southwest found contractors of every stripe with dramatic gains this year.
Overall, the revenue reported by all 140 firms participating this year totaled
just shy of $12 billion, the first time this ranking has exceeded the $10 billion
mark.
Perini Building Company, a general building contractor, seized the
top spot again in this year's ranking. Last year the firm increased their revenue
by over 64 percent in the 3-state region, and this year they did it again with
a jaw-dropping 67 percent jump in construction revenue. These factors and others
led to Perini being named Southwest Contractor's General Contractor of the Year.
Marnell
Corrao Associates, Inc., came a close second with revenue exceeding $569 million
in 2005. The firm's largest project awarded in 2005 was the $145 million Turnberry
Town Square in Las Vegas, Nev.
Revenue reported by Arizona contractors
rose by nearly 10 percent from 2004. Most individual contractors saw double-digit
growth in 2005. Some Arizona-based firms more than doubled their revenue from
the previous year, including Kiewit Corporation, which jumped from 35th on our
chart to 14th place, and Opus West Construction Corp., which saw revenue climb
262 percent.
Nevada contractors blew away last year's phenomenal gain of
38.6 percent by posting a 55 percent increase in construction revenue over
2004. M.J. Dean Construction increased their revenue by $100 million and climbed
nine spots in the chart, while J.A. Tiberti Construction Co., Inc. more than
doubled their revenue to $286 million for 2005. New Mexico finally got invited
to the party, with a refreshing 40 percent increase over the previous year. This
sent the revenue total for all reporting New Mexico firms over the $1 billion
mark for the first time since Southwest Contractor began these rankings, and the
first time the state has enjoyed double-digit increases.
Wooten Construction
Company of Las Cruces rose 24 spots in this year's ranking.
"We nearly
doubled our volume in one year because of the Dona Ana County Government Office
Building, which was the biggest project we have ever been awarded," said
Lisa Wasson, bookkeeper for Wooten Construction Company in Las Cruces, NM.
"The future prospects in southern New Mexico are very bright because there
are three school district bond issues, state appropriation money and numerous
New Mexico State University projects all coming up in the near future."

year's list includes our second annual ranking of the safest contractors in the
