The state's first Rail Runner commuter train station, which will be located in Bernalillo, recently broke ground. The Sandoval County/U.S. 550 station is one of nine stations being constructed for the commuter rail service between Belen and Bernalillo, which will begin service next year. Twin Mountain Construction was awarded the construction contract.
The station will have seating for commuters, 175 parking spaces, windscreens and bike racks. The first segment of the Governor Richardson Investment Partnership (GRIP) project between Belen and Bernalillo is estimated to cost $75 million. The second Rail Runner route between Bernalillo and Santa Fe is scheduled to be completed by 2008.
The Belen to Bernalillo service includes five locomotives and ten passenger cars.
